I had to replace the black and gray tanks in my 5er and there was not room do anything like you are suggesting without getting too close to the ground for my comfort. That being said, both of the tanks are shaped to do a pretty good job of draining with the side arrangement. The quart or so of water that may be left behind has never been a hinderance to me.

If I want it done more thoroughly, I just either raise or lower the landing gear, depending on the tank.
