Evidently the thieves carried the same master keys that we carry on our fire apparatus, so cables and chains hardly slowed them down. Anyone who didn't have a chain or cable at least saved the cost of it.
Other than putting them in a steel box on the truck, or maybe well under the trailer so they're out of sight, I'm not sure there's any way to protect them from someone determined to make off with them.
