Sometimes I have to also move the truck backwards slightly to take pressure off the jaws when unhitching. Found that to be the case with all our hitches. You do not have to manually close the jaws when disconnected. The hitch is designed so the jaws remain open facilitating rehitching. Unlike a reese, if you back your kingpin into a curt with the jaws closed, you will damage the hitch. Letting the truck creep forward a second before starting out generally eliminates chucking.
