Good question Bill,
The floats are the only thing in the water itself, and they are styrofoam filled. If the river did freeze, all that would happen is the floats would be pushed upward out of the water since they are tapered slightly. The float manufacturer recommends removal if the ice is large, broken and moving. The river where we are at flows at a good pace and as far as I know (last 6 years) has not frozen to any major degree. Bottom line, the entire system stays in the water year round. There are devices made that will stir the water and prevent freezing if it would be a problem. Where we are at, I don't think it will be a problem.
