We have a Yorkie and a Maltease. The Yorkie is fine as long as I am around, but the Maltease is different. When the storm and thunder approaches or firecrackers start going off he heads to the middle of the house and shakes and cries. I pick him up and put him on the sofa beside me. I then cover his ears with my hand and talk to him. Pretty soon he stops shaking and even falls asleep. Give it a try before you give him sedatives.
