My front AC does exactly the same, and the returns are clean. Before this thread was started I suspected the thermostat was faulty so I bought one for $44; very easy to change out. However, it didn't fix the problem. There must be some communication problem at the AC control board. However, I'm going to confirm that both t-stats are wired the same before giving up.
