People have talked about this before and the consensus has always been that it is not a good idea. Last year we went north from Bakersfield to Portland. We stopped to see Yosemite along the way. We took I-5, with the idea of maybe driving over to the coast. That did not happen as the distance to the coast from I-5 was greater than I figured.
