I have vertical vents at the partition header between the kitchen/dining room area and the living room. We have slide toppers and I believe that makes a big difference. They reflect the heat and keeps the sun from directly hitting the top of the slides. We also turn the ceiling fan on low to keep the air moving. Never had to open the fantastic fan vent, but that is an option and I would only open it very little.
