My second unit serves as a back up to the main for the most part. We do use it in very hot weather. In the past, I have had the thermostat go out in hot weather. We were able to keep reasonably cool with the second unit until I could get it repaired. I don't think that option would be available with one control. Got to weigh your options and make a choice.
