Getting through or around Winchester is the toughest part, once you are out of town, it is a very relaxing trip (half four lane, half very straight two-lane) through rural farm-type areas of western Virginia with a couple of small communities on the way. Truckers use the route much as it sounds you are going to. There are several alternative ways to get to 522 from I-81. Route 37 at Bartonville to 522 is your best bet and completely bypasses the downtown area . The only white knuckle areas will be in Winchester itself if you decide to go through town.
