There are at least a couple reasons I would pull them in when not using the unit for a time. If the slides are out, especially in a climate with any significant sunshine/UV concern both the wiper seals against the slide walls and the bulb seals behind the slide facia (outer slide trim) are exposed and can further deteriorate. Not so much when the slides are in and the facia conceals them from the sun. As well, little critters (think those tiny, slimy white tree frogs, ants and spiders places like Florida offers that can get thru seemingly anything), as well as heavy rain intrusions and other atmospheric debris that are more likely to sneak into the unit via any small gaps the seals may not fully contain. Obviously there are many other places critters can let themselves in but closing your slides while away makes for less of them.
