Back in the late 60s I drove truck servicing the 13 western states. I high
hitched a 40 foot flat bed with a load of building trusses. Drove it from Chino Ca to Los Angeles in morning traffic. Not all that far maybe 50 or so miles. Didn’t notice a problem till one of the other drivers asked why is my trailer was leaning to one side? After checking the rig out I found the high hitch. Drop the landing gear and re hitched.

Problem was two things. We leased our tractors from Hertz so when a leased tractor was in for say oil change they would supply us with one of their fleet rentals. The fleet rental that last pulled this trailer had a taller stance than my tractor. Plus I was in a hurry and distracted and did not do a visual check on the hitch. I did a pull test and was surprised it did not disconnect then.

Learn something new every day ever sense then I always do a visual check plus a pull test.
