The transfer switch doesn't care if the generator is installed in the front storage compartment or somewhere outside. Many here have added a plug to the front wall and connected it to the transfer switch. That way if the park's shore power station is closer to the front than the rear, you can plug the umbilical cord there. When boondocking, you can use the same plug and umbilical (with appropriate adapter plugs) to connect the external generator.

Be sure to use the appropriate wire size from the transfer switch to the external receptacle based on the maximum expected voltage. Getting #6 wire out through the pin box will be a challenge. Add a plug to front wall and be done with it.
