It's nice to take care of something like this for the long term. For the short term it seems like the plug defeated the purpose since the hole was so small it eventually blocked. On the other hand you shouldn't remove the plug or it becomes an entry point for undesirable critters.

Maybe one can replace it with a mesh screen of some kind and get the best of both worlds. I'm guessing this is not the fix-all solution since the mesh might eventually get clogged with dust and the like but this should take a while.

Just another thing to worry about in the world of Montanas.
