I guess I misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were asking about how much you'd have to pay for a gallon of diesel before the payback would be worth the extra cost. If that is what you were asking then that would be a very personal thing. It is whatever it is worth to you. For us it will probably be about $5 or more.

A couple of years ago while on a trip into Canada we paid just over $5. Thankfully as soon as we got home the price started coming down! Of course! Anyway I suspect somewhere around that price would the thing that would slow our travels down or even stop them. Most likely we'd simply travel only in our local area. The CA Central Coast is about 150 miles from where we live. I suspect we'd spend a lot of time over there.
