When driving in hilly terrain, I find I get worse mileage with cruise control. CC can’t anticipate hills, so it tries to accelerate after you start to slow; this wastes fuel. I will accelerate gradually as I approach the hill. CC does have an advantage when descending hills because it utilizes the variable turbo vanes as a poor man’s jake brake. Also, on steep hills, I will manually shift to keep the revs in the sweet spot (2000 to 2500 rpm).
My typical mileage is in the 11 to 12 range, but I have seen 8.5 on one trip in a very strong headwind.
