I believe what you are doing will work. How are you using the remote to change channels?
Did you elect to purchase just one? Each household is allowed two coupons to allow for purchasing two STBs. Then you can place an STB in the bedroom and one in the living room. The connection on the back of the amplifier can remain connected to the ampliflier and you place the STB at the other end of the coax in the living room. The bedroom STB can connect on the RF connection on the front. Or you could purchase a 'splitter' and split the connection on the back of the amplifier if the amplifier is in an inconvenient location to use the front connection.
