You got it right Maxwell. It is an automatic change over, but you must do what stengels said. If not, you loose track of which tank you are on and you could end up with two empty tanks. You just have to get into the habit of checking your indicator every few days or so depending on your consumption.
I use mine all the time and we have never run out of propane in all my years of RVing.
