New Slide Topper Measuring

I decided to put on slide toppers. I am not asking if I should put them on!

I am confused on how to measure for the toppers. CW and Others say to measure outside flange to flange. OK, I measure 87" for the bedroom slide. From that they say to order a 96" cover.

With that 96" I will have the awning extending 4 1/2" beyond the flange on each side. When you add the width of the flange to the room there will be almost 8" of awning extending past the sidewall of the slide.

That seems excessive. I don't see in any pictures of slides with toppers that amount of overhang on each end of the awning. Most look like they are about even with the end of the flange.

Can anyone confirm how much should extend beyond the flange on their toppers?

Seems to me that if I order a 90" topper that would be more in line with what I think I am looking at in pictures.
