Ray, when I re-wired my axles, I used 12/2 stranded wire that is used for heavy duty extension cords or on something like a skill saw. Sold by the foot @ Lowes, etc. Ask for "SO" type wire.
I soldered all ends and used heat shrink. Ran the wire across the axle tube and secured with plastic tye straps. Use black straps. Will not become brittle like white ones will.
Glad you found it. Now go to the other 3 wheels and inspect them for fraying. One was worn thru, and you probably have another one that is getting ready to wear thru.
