Look like 12vdc batteries in which case they should be connected in parallel. And the battery on the left has its ground wire going somewhere other than the same ground point on the frame structure for some reason. If you want some improvement, I would remove the screw used to hook the right battery negative ground to the frame, grind off paint on the top and bottom, install a bolt with the head from underneath and a lock washer and nut tightened against the frame...then use another nut to attach the cable to this "stud" that you installed.
