We didn't need any extra tires. Most of those reports come from the time when the road was much less modern than it is now. The secret is to slow down. Almost all the frost heaves are marked and when they're marked, respect them. They will give you a jolt if you're traveling too fast. The trip isn't any different than traveling on the roads in the USA. They all vary and are usually not four lanes, but they're well cared for and some of the roads will be repaired by the time you arrive.
