I was looking at the arrangement today. I think that the pins would probably be ok, even if traveling. Like you said, that's across two plates, so there's good support there.
I actually think in the summer I'll be ok. It's the winters that I won't. I was actually able to get I there today, but needed an outside ladder. Wasn't too bad, though....
