Art, the one I have, brand name "The First Years," model 3808, operates on 6V. the receiver can be operated on batteries or a 120V adapter, and the transmitter on an adapter. Either one could be operated on external batteries. I don't think they make this model anymore, but there are several others on the market, including one that includes a camera.
