Not on these valves. The membrane is enclosed inside a plastic case so all that happens is that you can and probably will get tank and/or sewer oder back into the shower.

If it were me, I'd replace the valve and see. Worked for us. The other thing we did was begin to use a stainless screen on all our drains. With the amount of hair and stuff we have to clean out of that screen all the time it's no wonder the valve can stick shut occasionally.
