Yep, the white membrane is commonly called a joker valve in the boating world where it is used in marine toilets. Mine has let in tank odors more than it has worked correctly. And sometimes, after not using it when we go away from the monte for a week, it will not let water out of the shower until it is ankle deep...then drains big time. Having lived with this since we bought, I am now getting ready to put in a good, old-fashioned p trap. John
