I just have to chime in. Chris is right that we both think that a UPS is the way to go, if it wasn't for the weight factor.
I just looked at the stats on my desktop UPS (made by APC), in the past 4 weeks, it has switched to battery backup 7 times for "blackout" conditions for a total of 34 seconds. APC considers a blackout condition to be voltage below 90 volts. My specific unit will do a battery boost if the voltage is between 90V and 110V. This is in my stick house on a regular room circuit.
