Avoid Rt. 95 which runs N-S through all the big cities on the east coast and can be stress inducing even without the 5er. An alternative I would suggest is Rt. 81 up through Pa. It's a big trucking route, but a much easier drive. There are routes from there to take you into the northeast (rt 84) or up through New York (rt 87). It all depends how much time you have on your hands. There's a lot to see up that way.
