I don't think I would even try to figure it out. I would rewire the fixture since it sounds likt the wire insulation failed initially and if it melted it is definitely unsafe. If you wanted to have an increased margin of safety, you can install the next heavier guage wire. Melted wires are not good, it usually means that the wire is not enough for the breaker, but this obviously would not be the case in the original design. Sounds like something got frayed or nicked. Again, I would replace the wiring run, without a doubt.
