Sorry that I read your post as non self priming. If the pump you put in has a mesh filter attached, you want to make sure the o ring is installed and filter hand tight. If the pump has push in fittings that latch when pushed in, make sure that they are latched. As people have said, it is the pump inlet that will be causing the issue. If screw in fittings, it may be that the inlet one has a defective thread allowing air in.
