Steve I have to agree with you. I was having wear problems at 8500 miles and was becoming concerned. When I took the wheels off (upgraded to Mor/Ryde IS and 17.5 wheels) I really looked hard at the tires and have to say they are not that bad.

I spoke with a bunch of guys from the Escapees who have heavy rigs and most had some odd wear like that but not enough to cause any issues long term. Several had over 50k miles on them with no problem.

Another point was mentioned that these tires are made to be re-treadded and have a LOT of rubber below the tread and that the wear we are seeing is really nothing.

In any event - I moved up to the 17.5's and G114's just because I wanted more reserve and have put about 5,000 miles on them the last month and between the IS and the new tires... zero edge wear so far.
