Gee, I hate that I might add to your anxiety, but the powdery black "dust" might be mold spores. I have seem mold attach itself to plastics. I think I would have someone who knows about molds and mildews take a look. If your carpet was wet for an extended period of time, I would be suspicious. I really hope that I am wrong.
