We made ours out of a 6 gallon marine tank with marine quick-disconnect hoses. If I had to do it over, with the carrier that we made, I would probably use 5 gallon plastic gerry-cans with a notched feeder hose inside (the notch is to keep the end of the hose from getting into the corner and preventing fuel flow). The upright cans would be easier to transport.

That being said, we use the marine tank and a two gallon gas can. We actually use the small gas can more often than the marine tank; the latter is used most often when we're either staying for a few days or if it is hot and we need to run the air so that our dog stays comfortable. With both gens running full bore, we get about 14 hours out of the marine tank with full gen tanks (almost 8 gallons).
