Sue's got it right as far as what they USED to be. Our previous TT and this one both held true to the length rule (measured to the front of the tongue. I think fifth wheels may have been measured to where the back of the truck would be theorectically. In other words the 3400 might have measured 38 but would have only added 34 feet to the length of your tow vehicle. They probably just gave up since there are long beds, short beds, different kinds of hitches placed in different areas of the bed.
