If it's not too far I'd guess you'll be OK. The tank is thin walled,expands, and sags down quite a bit when it's totally full so you can imagine what goes on when traveling down the road. There isn't much holding the tank in if you ever drop the belly pan down to put an eye on it. There is a step molded on the tank itself that supports it between two metal crossmembers and usually a couple of light gage metal straps run under the tank and are screwed to each crossmember. I too only run with maybe 1/3 tank or less.
