I also use one of the coiled cables. And I attached an eye bolt to one of my hitch handle bolts to clip the cable to. That way it all turns with the hitch and never stretches out when turning and almost eliminates any possibility of catching on anything.

Each spring, I jack one wheel at a time off the ground, pull the breakaway pin, and try to turn that wheel to ensure that the brake locks up. Put the pin back in, jack the next tire, and repeat the sequence. Tests the pin and each brake.
