We leave ours open just so we can see the lights. But I see no reason you could not close it. It does need some air flow during the drying cycle as it blows air out the vent. But I don't think any cabinet is air tight enough to worry. But you could close the door enough to leave a small opening around the door to let air in and keep cat out.
