I asked a similar question on the MOC a few years ago. Lots of good recommendations. We carry 2 adult bikes. I decided to not do the following:
1. Put them on top of the truck. To much to load and unload.
2. Not going to put them on the back of the Monty. All kinds of issues.
3. Back of my short bed truck--to small.
I did the following.
1. Settled on installing a front receiver on the truck and carry both bikes there. Over the past 3 years it has worked very well for us. Easy driving with full view of the road. And I can watch the bikes. Also easy to load and unload. I have a Thule bike support system. I leave the Thule on the truck when I am home. I have no reason to relocate the Thule to the rear receiver.
When ever I unload the bikes, I always secure them to the front landing legs with a steel cable and pad lock.
Hope that helps.
