When I installed my fireplace, I ended up using wood of various types including some red oak and some whitewood trim pieces. I used 3 different colors of minwax. I applied a coat of one, let it dry, then a coat of another, let it dry, then a coat of another. And repeated a couple of times with one color or the other until the color of the new wood closely matched the original.
In the picture, they all appear to be the same type wood, but there are actually 3 or 4 different types.
