I have an older, '06, Ford F350. I was warned years ago to NOT connect or disconnect the 7 pin connection between the trailer and truck when the engine is running. The surge may/will blow the fuse.
I don't know if that is still the case but take a look at what you are doing. If the fuse was blown then maybe the warning still stands.
