I take what is perhaps an overkill approach. I seldom ever pump directly into the main tank. I pump into my auxiliary tank and pump from that into my main tank. I have the aux tank equipped with fuel and water separators as the first stage then into the final fuel filter before pumping into the main tank. That way fuel is filtered twice before actually getting into the trucks two filters. BTW, according to some Cummins reading on another forum, be careful using overly restrictive fuel filters, i.e., 2 microns or so, some have experienced fuel starvation. Just sayin'.
