I would rather the spring shaft break as it is designed to do rather than have the gear box strip gears... The spring shaft is a cheap and easy fix, the replacement of the gearbox not so much.... They know they have issues with them (yes the new upgraded gearbox) but BAL has yet to do anything nor are they providing owners with any compensation for their known issues with the gearbox's... Only good thing for most is they fail on the way out not on the way in so they stay closed going down the road. I'm not so sure yours will stay closed given you indicate the gears broke while retracting in. Good luck
