The new antenna sits just like the old one in the same spot so it's not right on the roof at all.
Also, this will not help you eliminate a decoder box. If you do not have a digital TV this antenna will not work without the box. Considering the price of digital HD TVs has dropped so much in the last couple of years, this might be the time for a new TV!
