Actually what happens if it drains into the gray and you forget to open the valve, the water comes back into the washer and the washer goes besirk, twirling the dial around and around. Of course I know this because................ Once you open the valve, everything returns to normal. There is some back up into the shower, but not where it overflows. We've only done this twice (once was enough) and we did not have any water on the floor anywhere.
