Experimented this weekend and found that if I set the rear bedroom unit at the temp I was comfortable sleeping and set fan to continuous low speed everything cooled evenly and efficiently.
The rear unit would cycle the compressor as it easily cooled the rear. With the fan running on low all the time it would not allow any cool air from the front unit to travel rearward and actually increase flow to the ducts in the front living room.

With the fan setting on auto on the rear unit and the front unit running there is a significant amount of air that makes it all the way to the rear bedroom vents and drops the flow forward.
