One thing every RV owner should have is a 12V lighted tester, it has an alligator clip on one end of a wire to connect to ground and a sharp pointed probe to poke into wiring. If you had one of those it would take a matter of seconds to see if the switch is opening when the pin is inserted.
It sounds like it might be ok and your description is typical of the plastic pin, not to alarm you unnecessarily but personally I would want to make sure all is well by testing the wires and making sure it takes a bit of effort to pull the pin.
