If left in the "fill" position, our pump will occasionally come on when no water is being used. Set the valve to the "normal" position and that will most likely solve the problem.

If your valve is set to the "normal" position and the pump still cycles, it is either a water leak (connection or valve, possibly a toilet fill valve) or a bad check valve at the pump.

Yes, the pump can be noisy. Installing an accumulator tank and/or positioning water lines so they are not touching framing will help quite things down some.
