Wow, I can't help on the smart phone app., except to comment on the many logs I have read about the smart phones being not as good as the GPS units.
Check the Forum on Groundspeak and see what they say about it.
General rule for me is to Use something edesigned for the task, but again, I don't know anything about the app's.
