Way back before the Teflon lube plates, I used grease as that's what it was. You can't imagine how easily that grease could 'jump' from the hitch to your pants even when you were nowhere close.
A bit of silicone spray on the lube plate or hitch face wont hurt but is not necessary.
A spare lube plate might be considered too. I have a 'history' of snagging the edge while hooking up as I imagine others will as well
