You can see the spring shaft if you get a short step ladder, get someone to operate the switch and watch with a flashlight, if the spring shaft is turning on the electric motor end and still turning on the gearbox end then it is the gears that are done. I expect if it is moving slightly then the gears are likely toast.

You can likely get it to move by assisting it with your strength while someone operates the switch...
